FALLS CHRUCH, Va. (7News) — A non-profit organization is working to fight food insecurity in the community.
Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), a nonprofit humanitarian and advocacy organization provided fresh meat and food at Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Va. as part of an Islamic tradition known as Qurbani.
Qurbani is a special program that enables donors around the world to buy freshly-prepared cuts of meat to support vulnerable populations around the world.
Thursday’s event brought dozens of people with lines stretching very long by the Islamic center.
The meat distributed is halal, in accordance with guidelines. There were other foods being donated in boxes to members of the community.
This comes after Muslims across the world marked one of their major holidays, Eid al-Adha, during which meat is commonly served.
According to The Capital Area Food Bank, more than ever, communities of color and households with children have been disproportionately impacted by food insecurity, due in part to the pandemic.
