Early afternoon on March 28, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar, striking the country’s second biggest city, Mandalay, and felt over 600 miles away in the Thailand capital, Bangkok. More than 150 people have died, over 700 people have been injured, and civilian infrastructure including buildings and bridges have been destroyed.

IRUSA has been responding to emergencies across the country for more than a decade. Since 2011, DMT has responded to more than 50 disasters. When Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida in September 2024, IRUSA responded immediately – deploying staff and volunteers to perform muck outs of damaged homes.
A few of our long-term disaster responses also include constructing “flood shelves” in 100 homes in the wake of Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico, and supporting communities across North Carolina in response to repeated devastation from Atlantic storms – namely hurricanes Mathew, Florence, and Dorian.
Heavy monsoon rains have led to flash floods in 11 districts across the country, affecting 5.7 million people and disproportionately affecting low-income neighborhoods. According to local sources, 18 people have been killed and many more have been left stranded, thousands of homes have been damaged, and acres of crops – a main food supply and source of livelihood – have been washed away.
Thanks to your donations, Islamic Relief USA is working to provide emergency relief to our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh.

“The people of Afghanistan have already been through so much suffering. This earthquake is now a double calamity for many families who urgently need our support. We are appealing for as much financial assistance to help those affected by this disaster. Many people have lost loved ones, and many [are] injured. Their needs will be huge in the days to come.” – Umair Hasan, Islamic Relief Afghanistan Country Director
Islamic Relief is working with local partners to provide emergency relief and promote long-term recovery. The initial emergency response includes cash assistance for food and other basic needs; essential non-food items including hygiene kits; and transitional shelter and rental assistance.
Early recovery goals include construction of shelters; rehabilitation of water sources and construction of latrines; cash-for-work opportunities to repair community infrastructure; skill-based training and promotion of income-generating activities; and formation of community self-help groups (SHG’s). Our goal is to help restore hope and dignity to families in Afghanistan as they rebuild their homes and communities.
