Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), a nonprofit humanitarian and advocacy organization, issued the following statement regarding the change in power in Afghanistan and the aftermath of conditions there:
“As we have reached the third year since the change in government in Afghanistan, Islamic Relief USA remains committed to its people, ensuring that humanitarian assistance and livelihood programs are administered to the people who have suffered so much in the past three years, both from natural and man-made disasters.
“Whether it’s through the procurement or provision of food, water, medical care, and emergency assistance during floods and earthquakes, Islamic Relief USA has worked hard to ensure the basic needs of Afghans are met. However, we cannot do this noble work alone. It cannot be left simply to the non-governmental organizations to relieve their hardships and build the foundation for a promising life and future.
“Further engagement from the world community is needed to solve Afghanistan’s long-term problems, which include an ailing economy, a backsliding in educational opportunities for our sisters, poor health-care infrastructure, dire poverty and an uptick in refugees that’s creating displacement. These problems are too big for NGOs to solve on their own, but nonetheless have tried to. It’s now time for the international community to provide equitable and tangible solutions to relieve the widespread suffering Afghans continue to face. In the United States, Congress can take the simple action of passing the Afghan Adjustment Act. The least we can do is provide safe residency to the thousands of Afghans who have risked their lives to help us achieve our objectives.”
