Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) is an independent, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and the premier Muslim charity in the United States. For over 30 years, IRUSA has developed a world-class operational infrastructure to deliver life-saving humanitarian relief and sustainable development assistance across the U.S. and in 60 countries globally. IRUSA strictly adheres to all federal and state laws, consistently earning top accreditation ratings from leading independent U.S. charity evaluators, including the GuideStar Gold Seal of Transparency and a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.
On September 12, 2026, UK-based Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), forced a resolution at its International General Assembly to terminate IRUSA鈥檚 membership in the global Islamic Relief federation. This vote was pushed through while court-ordered dispute resolution proceedings were actively underway, and follows more than two years of decisive steps by IRUSA to formally disassociate from the UK entity on a negotiated basis at the insistence of its regulatory authorities, the United States government.聽
IRW has drawn intense, persistent scrutiny from foreign and U.S. government entities, financial institutions, and international humanitarian bodies. Most critically for IRUSA, this scrutiny culminated in September 2024 and October 2025, when the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee called on the IRS to investigate and potentially revoke IRUSA鈥檚 tax-exempt status based strictly on its affiliation with IRW. The Committee cited no wrongdoing by IRUSA, pointing exclusively to allegations surrounding IRW, including alleged links to terrorism, antisemitic statements by leadership, bank account closures, and designations by foreign governments. IRUSA subsequently suspended its association with IRW in October 2025. Rather than engaging constructively, IRW pursued a course of retaliatory conduct, including executing deceptive and unlawful fundraising campaigns targeting American donors and refusing to cooperate with mandatory grant audits after IRUSA discovered IRW had exported items from Iran for a project in Afghanistan. To enforce accountability and safeguard its standing as a trusted U.S. charity, IRUSA was compelled to file a federal lawsuit against IRW in March 2026.
Given the swift and proactive measures IRUSA has taken to sever ties, IRUSA views IRW鈥檚 procedural maneuver as a bad faith and ineffective attempt to bypass the very accountability IRUSA has consistently demanded. IRUSA will not allow a foreign entity to compromise three decades of independently built operational excellence, rigorous compliance, transparent financial stewardship, and donor trust. IRUSA remains fully compliant with U.S. laws and national security standards, steadfastly committed to expanding its world-class programs and delivering vital aid both at home and internationally with uncompromising integrity.
