Alexandria, Va. – Islamic Relief USA has partnered with Delivering Good to secure and coordinate donations of new merchandise to IRUSA’s warehouse in Springfield, where they are sorted and then packaged to be sent to eight military bases that are currently housing refugees from Afghanistan. The items include critically needed winter clothes: jackets, hats, gloves, underwear, shoes, pants, shirts, etc.
The $400,400 purchase, the largest to date for Delivering Good, will help fulfill the clothing needs for 9,737 refugees to help in their transition to life in the US. A portion of the grant will be used to produce more than 9,000 new winter coats through Delivering Good’s Manufacturing Good program in which it partners with retailers and manufacturers to purchase or produce specific, high-need items.
According to Donna Charles, Delivering Good’s Director of Strategic Initiatives, “Partnering with IRUSA allows us to use our expertise and deep relationships within the retail and manufacturing industries to provide a wide range of new, quality clothing items to these families and individuals as they work to create new homes and lives in the US. We are grateful for their generous grant and for the opportunity to be involved in this important project.”
“We are grateful to be partnering with Delivering Good for this worthy endeavor,” said Sharif Aly, chief executive officer of Islamic Relief USA. “The refugee population is transitioning to a new life and country, and it’s vital that we make them feel welcome and provide them with the necessary resources. Providing high-quality clothes is one way to help them adjust in their new surroundings.”
As of mid-September, some 53,000 Afghan evacuees were staying at the military bases.
