ALEXANDRIA, VA. – Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), a nonprofit humanitarian and development organization, announced today that it will donate $190,000 to the Bright Horizon Academy (BHA) at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD), where three people died following a fatal shooting on Monday, May 18.
IRUSA is also issuing a $20,000 grant to Amaly, a mental health services organization based in San Diego. These funds will help support psychological services for anyone who seeks to increase capacity for online individual counseling, specifically for children. It will also serve the school faculty and make services available to the community.
The $190,000 will go toward paying the salaries of teachers and other faculty for the remainder of the school year.
“This funding will play a critical role, ensuring there is no financial burden on the school teachers and faculty so they can focus on recovery during this emotionally difficult time,” said Ahmed Shehata, Chief Executive Officer at IRUSA. “Islamic Relief USA will support ICSD every step of the way.”
IRUSA continues to work closely with the ICSD community to identify urgent needs. IRUSA has worked closely with the ICSD and Amaly on several projects and programs over the years.
IRUSA announced earlier this week that it is mobilizing to deploy trained chaplains to the ICSD community. The team — trained in emotional and spiritual care — is coordinating efforts to support individuals and families coping during this time of loss.
