Islamic Relief Helps Support Production of Artificial Limbs for Residents in Yemen

Alexandria, Va.  – As a result of years of conflict in and around the Yemeni city of Taiz, many people have lost limbs due to injuries sustained during the conflict or by conflict remnants, such as landmines and unexploded ordnances.

The Taiz Orthopedic Center is one of three prosthetic centers in Yemen. It provides crucial therapy to Yemenis affected by injury and loss of a limb through the provision of physical therapy and artificial limbs. Islamic Relief Yemen began working with the center in April 2018 by providing needed materials and equipment so the center can continue its work.

Now, through a project funded by Islamic Relief USA, Islamic Relief Yemen will help the Taiz Orthopedic Center improve the quality of its services and better equip the Center to serve Yemenis in and around Taiz far into the future. Under this project, IR Yemen will provide the center with new artificial limb manufacturing equipment, which will allow the center to create better quality, higher tech limbs for its clients.

Four Center staff members will be trained on how to use the new manufacturing technique and equipment in Sweden, before returning to Yemen to train the other health providers at the center on this new technology. The project will provide incentives for prosthetic and physiotherapy workers to ensure they can continue providing quality care to patients.
