B.C. Dodge & R. Mordant Mahon talk to Islamic Relief’s Sharifa Abdaziz about gender equality issues on this episode of “What a Relief!” — IRUSA’s official podcast.
Listeners hear the latest straight from U.N. headquarters on this week’s “What a Relief!” podcast, as Islamic Relief Worldwide’s Sharifa Abdaziz joins B.C. and Mordant on the line from a U.N. summit on gender equality.
Sharifa represented the Islamic Relief family at the summit, which explored ways to empower women and end discrimination and violence towards women and girls.
On this podcast, Sharifa describes problems women face around the world, from forced marriages to honor killings to lack of education.
Change starts with education, she says. It builds confidence in women, gives them skills, reduces discrimination and empowers them to bring about change in their communities. Secondary education—equivalent to high school—is critical.
“If we want to create sustainable change, we have to educate the community—not just the women but the men as well,” she said. “Islamic Relief is a facilitator for the process of change.”
The U.N. event brought together representatives from many faiths to work toward these goals. “We are actually on the same page—a world where there is no suffering or poverty,” Sharifa says.
Tune in to find out what’s succeeding right now, and hear a story that touched Sharifa.
