Chad

Focus on Chad

Chad is currently the largest refugee-hosting country per capita in Africa, and the country grapples with a convergence of environmental shocks, regional instability, and a staggering influx of people fleeing the war in neighboring Sudan. As of early 2026, the country鈥檚 already fragile infrastructure is under unprecedented strain, pushing millions of Chadians and refugees into a state of acute vulnerability.

Current Challenges

Unprecedented Refugee InfluxSince the conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, over 900,000 new refugees have crossed into eastern Chad.

Severe Food InsecurityHunger has reached critical levels, with an estimated 5.7 million people facing malnutrition. Approximately 1.8 million children under give are suffering from acute malnutrition.聽

Extreme PovertyRecent estimates suggest that over 42% of Chad鈥檚 population lives below the poverty line. Basic services like clean water, education, and healthcare remain out of reach for the majority of the population in crisis-affected areas.
