Afghanistan Earthquake Emergency

Date: Late Sunday, August 31

6.0 magnitude earthquake struck 17 miles from the eastern city of Jalalabad, a mountainous area where people live in fragile homes made of mud. On Sep. 2, a second earthquake of 5.5 magnitude shook the same region, prompting fears of further damage and destruction. The aftershock caused panic and halted initial rescue efforts as it sent rocks sliding down mountains, cutting off roads further and making it dangerous to dig through rubble.

Currently, 1,457 people have been killed, 3,394 people have been injured, and more than 6,700 homes have been destroyed.

Your support will help Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) distribute hot meals, water purification kits, and shelter items to families in need. We’re also working to deploy mobile clinics, stocked with essential medical supplies.

World’s Biggest Humanitarian Crises

Afghanistan’s refugee crisis is one of the biggest humanitarian crises our world has faced. More than four decades of conflict, instability, and ensuing chronic poverty has left an estimated 24 million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance and driven more than 5 million people out of their homes. Women and children are the most affected, making up 80% of newly displaced Afghans. The fundamental rights of women and young girls are under threat and more and more young girls are out of school each day. That’s why, thanks to your support, IRUSA works to provide access to basic needs, like education, to vulnerable families like Hela’s. Take a look at this success story!

Stories From The Ground

Hela’s Story

Hela lives in Kandahar with her parents and eight siblings. Her father is self-employed as a driver and her mother tends to the home throughout the day. Her father always wished for his children to go to school, but poverty and lack of access to education made things difficult. All the children knew was war. Thanks to support from donors like you, Hela was able to enroll in her local school. Every day, she wakes up excited to attend her classes. She has a new hope for her future.
