Alexandria, Virginia, January 16—Islamic Relief USA will support the President’s National MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 19,with staff and volunteers serving food and joining environmental programs..
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'”
As the Corporation for National and Community Service has proclaimed: Now more than ever, communities nationwide are in need of a dedicated forum for constructive dialogue and problem solving.
In answer to this call for participatory action, and with a mission to assist the vulnerable, Islamic Relief USA staff and volunteers are taking part in five service activities around the area to help our neighbors in need. The first, as pictured below from last year, is a food donation drive at two participating supermarkets in Alexandria. All collected items will be donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
In addition to the canned food drive, Islamic Relief USA staff and volunteers will also be giving out fresh produce and hot meals to those living on the street at America’s Islamic Heritage Museum in Washington, D.C. They will also be preparing meals at IRUSA’s office to be distributed in the evening to the Central Union Mission homeless shelter, also in the nation’s capital.
Finally, IRUSA also will take part in two environmental projects. Volunteers and staff will help clean up Sligo Creek Parkway in Maryland and will make wildflower seed balls at a Lutheran church in Virginia. The seed balls will be planted later to maintain our region’s diverse ecosystem..
