ALEXANDRIA, VA – Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit humanitarian and advocacy organization, has launched a new initiative by having its food trucks make stops in Chicago to help combat food insecurity. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to showcase the new food truck recently took place. Starting in 2025, the truck will provide some 2,000 hot meals each week at various stops in and around Chicago.
The food is from Tajeen, a halal restaurant popular for its gyro dishes, falafels, cheesesteaks and kebabs.
“Islamic Relief USA has long worked on reducing hunger and food insecurity in the United States, especially in parts of the country where the rates are high and access to nutritious meals or supermarkets is low. These trucks are an innovative solution to alleviate the crisis.”
In addition to Chicago, Islamic Relief USA will have its hot meals food trucks travel around Detroit and New York City, providing 2,000 and 3,000 meals per week, respectively. Food insecurity and hunger rates saw a notable increase in recent years, especially with the ending or scaling back of several federal food assistance and nutrition programs that saw increases during the Covid-19 pandemic. The idea for the food trucks came about to provide easier access to people who may lack transportation or have other logistical difficulties. Prophet Muhammad was known to have said that,
“He is not a believer whose stomach is full while the neighbor to his side is starving.”
By coming to the people, Islamic Relief USA hopes to see people meet their nutritional needs.
