FRANKFORT, Ky. – Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit humanitarian and advocacy organization, has deployed its Disaster Management Team to assist residents/families who sustained property loss or damage from the tornados, high winds, flooding and other severe weather that has led to massive devastation in several Southern and Midwestern states.
The organization will work with the American Red Cross, among others, in Kentucky to perform disaster assessment, meal distribution, and assist with securing shelter for displaced residents. IRUSA has budgeted $25,000 for these services.
“Islamic Relief USA stands with the people of Kentucky and other states that have experienced so much suffering and loss stemming from these major weather events. We want them to know we are here for you,” said Hani Hamwi, manager of the IRUSA Disaster Management Team. “We want to help in the recovery and rebuilding process”
Severe weather in the regions has caused damage and destruction. At least 45 deaths and more than 300 people have been injured, as of Wednesday, April 10. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency last weekend. Thousands of people were reported to have lost access to water, or were under boil water advisories.
Damage estimates have already exceeded $500 million.
