Focus on Sustainable Livelihood

Poverty is one of the most pressing problems our world faces today. According to the World Bank, around 8.5% of the world lives in extreme poverty. That’s nearly 700 million people struggling to live on less than $2.15 a day. Poverty is multidimensional, and those affected often experience deprivations in health, education, and living standards. The cycle of poverty is difficult to break. But there’s hope.

Around the world, you’re helping communities become self-sufficient. In 2024 alone, IRUSA implemented 78 projects across the world, supporting over 3,000,000 people. Take a look at this success story!

Ali’s Story

Somalia

Ali is a father of 11 children and a farmer of plants and vegetables including tomatoes, onions,

lettuce, lemons, dates, and guava. Ali recalls his years as a teenager when his family raised livestock. “When I was a teenager we were pure nomads with more than 80 camels and 700 sheep and goats and the situation of the country was good at that time. There was no fear of hunger and displacement and life was forging ahead happily.” Due to recurrent droughts in Somalia caused by climate change, Ali lost most of his livestock and finally decided to try his hand at agricultural farming on his family’s land. Access to water for irrigation has been a primary concern for Ali, and output has been low. Thanks to your donations, a drip irrigation system was installed on Ali’s land and a shallow well on his land was rehabilitated. Now, Ali is able to access water for irrigation easily. He also received training on agricultural practices and output. “Now water is available to me and with the skills and knowledge I got from the training, I am confident that this time my crop yield will be much higher than before.”
