January 12 2016 – Islamic Relief USA is once again supporting the President’s National MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 18 with hunger and other program support.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” In this vein the Corporation for National and Community Service organizing this day has proclaimed that now – more than ever before – communities nationwide are in need of a dedicated forum for constructive dialogue and problem solving.

In answer to this call for participatory action, and with a mission to assist the vulnerable, Islamic Relief USA staff and volunteers are taking part in five service activities around the DMV area to help our neighbors in need. The first is a food donation drive at a local supermarket in Alexandria, Virginia. All collected items will be donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

In addition to the can food drive across 3 participating stores, Islamic Relief USA will also be giving out fresh produce and hot meals to those living on the street at the Americas Islamic Heritage Museum in Washington, DC. They will also be preparing food packs in the home office to be distributed in the evening to the Central Union Mission homeless shelter, also in the Nation’s Capital.

Finally, staff and volunteers will be helping their immediate neighbors by doing preschool classroom rehabilitation with the Chirilagua Housing Cooperative and also helping out the environment in Greenbelt, MD with a tree protection project.
