SPRINGFIELD, VA, June 11, 2015—Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit charity providing humanitarian aid in more than three dozen countries, will be continuing to package food boxes for families in need in preparation for Ramadan this Sunday, June 14, 2015 following a successful community event last weekend. If you missed coming out, we invite you back to join us and talk to staff and volunteers during this final push. Nearly 20 cities will be receiving the boxes as they are distributed by our special community bus, departing next week.
Ramadan, the month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims all over the world, serves also as a reminder of the significant number of people who suffer from hunger on a daily basis. According to the most recent census report, over 17 million families in the United States are food insecure. 1 in 4 children is at risk for hunger. More than 46 million people living in the US live in poverty, the highest number recorded in the 52 years for which poverty statistics have been reported, according to the World Hunger Education Service.
Each of the 3,000 boxes packaged by Islamic Relief USA hold approximately 30 pounds of food, which is designed to help feed a family of five to seven people for the month. Food was acquired locally whenever possible and boxes generally include rice, wheat, lentils, oil, canned meat and dates.
