ALEXANDRIA, VA, June 26, 2015—Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit charity providing humanitarian aid in more than three dozen countries including the United States, will be distributing food to families in need at the Islamic Association of Raleigh tomorrow, Saturday, June 27.
The food distribution is part of a tour spanning nearly 20 cities across the United States during the Islamic month of Ramadan, which began last week. The food is available to anyone in need, regardless of faith.
Ramadan, the month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims all over the world, serves as a reminder of the significant number of people who suffer from hunger on a daily basis. According to the most recent census report, over 17 million families in the United States are food insecure. 1 in 4 children is at risk for hunger. More than 46 million people living in the United States live in poverty, the highest number recorded in the 52 years for which poverty statistics have been reported, according to the World Hunger Education Service.
Each of the 3,000 boxes packaged by Islamic Relief USA holds approximately 30 pounds of food, designed to help feed a family of five to seven people for two weeks to a month. The boxes were filled with foods like pasta, rice, beans, oil, canned meat, cheese, and dates by staff and volunteers in Springfield, Virginia, earlier this month.
