ALEXANDRIA, VA, June 18, 2015— Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit charity providing humanitarian aid in more than three dozen countries, began distributing package food boxes for families in need during the month of Ramadan which began this week. Nearly 20 cities will be visited by the bus over the next two weeks and New York is next!
Ramadan, the month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims all over the world, serves also as a reminder of the significant number of people who suffer from hunger on a daily basis. According to the most recent census report, over 17 million families in the United States are food insecure. 1 in 4 children is at risk for hunger. More than 46 million people living in the US live in poverty, the highest number recorded in the 52 years for which poverty statistics have been reported, according to the World Hunger Education Service.
Each of the 3,000 boxes packaged by Islamic Relief USA hold approximately 30 pounds of food, which is designed to help feed a family of five to seven people for the month. Foods are acquired locally whenever possible and generally include rice, wheat, lentils, oil, canned meat, and dates and were all hand packaged in Springfield, Virginia earlier this month by Islamic Relief staff and volunteers.
