Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit charity providing humanitarian aid in more than three dozen countries, will be distributing gifts for children in need in the US to celebrate the Eid holiday. Over a dozen cities will be receiving new toys purchased and wrapped by staff and volunteers. Toy will be gifted to vulnerable children in the greater DC area, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, North Carolina and California.
Long-time IRUSA volunteer Laila Khan and her children started the Eid toy drive idea four years ago. Since then, the Eid toy drive has been an IRUSA volunteer-driven effort with logistical & marketing support from IRUSA.
Each of the gifts is age and gender appropriate and distribution sites include houses of worship, homeless shelters and children’s wards in hospitals.
Note to Editors:
Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar (ninth month). Each day during this month, Muslims around the world abstain from food and drink between sunrise and sunset. They are also encouraged to give generously and care for fellow human beings to leverage some of their suffering. Muslims are also keen to share food with Muslim and non-Muslim neighbors and friends. In many Muslim countries there is a tradition of organizing free food kitchens for poor people during Ramadan. In the West, many Muslims volunteer or donate to local charities or food banks.
