Since 2015, Grecian shores have witnessed the arrival of more than 1.1 million refugees and migrants. Refugees who remain in Greece live in overcrowded camps awaiting asylum.
A closer look at refugees in Greece:
- More than 67,000 refugees and migrants awaiting asylum in Greece (Mercy Corps, December 2018)
- The Moira Centre on Lesvos Island hosts nearly 9,000 refugees and migrants, including 1,700 children. The camp only has a capacity to host around 3,000 people. (UNICEF, September 2018)
In 2015, Islamic Relief USA partnered with the International Rescue Committee to offer protection services to over 30,000 newly arrived refugees in Lesvos. Today, IRUSA is partnering with HIAS to provide legal services to over 600 extremely vulnerable refugees and migrants in Lesvos and Athens. The legal services will come at an especially critical time, given the rise in hate crimes against refugees.
