Remembering Srebrenica

In July 1995, more than 8,000 Muslim men and young boys were brutally killed during the Bosnian war in Srebrenica, a “safe-area” under protection by the United Nations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was the first country Islamic Relief USA raised funds for. In response to the devastating massacre, we provided vital emergency assistance including food aid, clean water, and clothing to survivors. And in the aftermath, we helped rebuild homes, schools, and places of worship.

Focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina

More than two decades after the war ended, the people and economy of Bosnia and Herzegovina are still suffering. To this day, bodies continue to be excavated and re-buried, giving some families an opportunity to perform a proper janazah prayer. An entire generation of husbands and fathers is lost, and one out of four households are headed by single mothers, who are at greater risk of poverty.

Our duty as human-beings, no matter your religion, is to honor the memory of the victims lost to this tragedy and provide relief to those who survived.

Islamic Relief’s Dedication to Bosnia and Herzegovina

After Islamic Relief’s initial response to the massacre, we have provided crucial aid to families in need.

A few of our most recent interventions include:

  • Health care aid to people of old age and/or with disabilities
  • Emergency response to disasters including floods
  • Orphan family support
  • Sustainable livelihood support
  • Winter aid

We Need YOUR Help

Thanks to you, we’ve been able to accomplish so much. But there’s still so much more to do. By continuing to support our efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, you can help make a difference in the lives of those in desperate need.

PLEASE NOTE: Donations made to IRUSA’s Bosnia fund may serve urgent or long-term programs in Bosnia or for Bosnian refugees in other countries.
