BURBANK, California (October 12, 2004) – Responding to the needs of the
victims of the crisis in Darfur, Sudan, the Atlanta Muslim community is holding
a benefit dinner on Sunday, October 17 at 5:00pm at Georgia State
University.
The crisis in Darfur, Sudan has left over 50,000 people dead and over one
million displaced. The World Health Organization reports that 6,000-10,000
people are dying every month in Sudan due to starvation and disease.
The situation in Darfur has been labeled by the United Nations as “the world’s
greatest humanitarian crisis.”
Speakers at the event include nationally-recogized Muslim Leader Imam Siraj
Wahhaj, as well as local Muslim leader Imam Furqan Muhammad, who recently
returned from Darfur as part of a delegation organized by the Islamic Society
of North America (ISNA).
The funds raised at the event will benefit displaced people in Darfur through
California-based Islamic Relief, which operates several emergency relief
projects in Darfur, including shelter, food distribution, healthcare, and
education.
