Anwar Khan Announced as IRUSA Chief Executive Officer

(Alexandria, VA)—After more than 20 years of working for Islamic Relief USA, co-founder Anwar Khan will now take the helm of the organization as Chief Executive Officer. Islamic Relief USA’s Board of Directors announced his appointment to be effective immediately.

Khan previously held the position of Chief Operating Officer, and has held a wide range of leadership positions in the organization. As one of the original co-founders of IRUSA, he has dedicated his working life to Islamic Relief’s mission to alleviate suffering, hunger, disease and illiteracy around the world and is the organization’s most passionate advocate. He reminds staff members on nearly a daily basis about the organization’s mission and purpose to serve people who are in need in the United States and around the world.

Khan began his tenure with the Islamic Relief family of organizations in the United Kingdom in 1993. In 1994, he moved to the United States and became one of IRUSA’s first employees. Since then, he has contributed to the organization’s expansion from a two-person operation to a national 501(c)3 charity that now has seven offices, some 100 employees, and thousands of volunteers, providing humanitarian aid to millions of people each year. He was appointed Deputy Chief Operating Officer in July 2013, and Chief Operating Officer in October 2013.

Before becoming Deputy COO in July 2013, Khan directed IRUSA’s program efforts, managed its fundraising offices, and oversaw its fund development work.

Khan’s work has taken him to the sites of natural disasters and conflicts throughout the United States, Middle East, Asia and Africa. He has also traveled for development work across Africa and South Asia, visiting locations including Timbuktu. He just recently returned from war-torn Syria, where he visited clinics supported by Islamic Relief that are providing critically-needed health services in conflict affected areas. In the United States, he helped begin a volunteer network that now comprises thousands of people.

It is with great pleasure that IRUSA welcomes Anwar Khan into his leadership role.
