Alexandria, Va. – Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit humanitarian and advocacy organization, applauds the announcement by President Joe Biden that the U.S government will contribute an additional $2.9 billion to address the global food security crisis. The president made the announcement during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where member states are convening this week to discuss some of the most challenging issues facing the world today. Taking collective action to address the spiraling global food security crisis was among the top priorities of the assembly.
The problem has increased dramatically over the past few years, due to overlapping crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, protracted conflicts, skyrocketing food and energy costs, the war in Ukraine, and the worsening impacts of climate change.
“With so many factors contributing to the global hunger crisis, it is essential that more financial resources be made available to mitigate the crisis before it becomes a full-blown, hard to manage catastrophe,” Islamic Relief USA said in a statement. “Some of the world’s most vulnerable populations are living in areas with famine or famine-like conditions. This much-needed assistance will help millions suffering from hunger. We call on other member states to follow suit.”
