Alexandria, VA – Islamic Relief affiliates around the world announced on Friday that they will pledge a combined $1 million to facilitate recovery and rebuilding efforts related to the recent damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas.
“Hurricane Harvey upended the lives of many residents in the greater Houston area,” said Sharif Aly, interim CEO for the non-profit humanitarian organization. “Islamic Relief USA remains committed to the residents who have suffered and lost so much. Their resilience is admirable and we want to help them rebuild their lives, grow spiritually, and come together for the common good to make the area and their lives even better than it was before the devastating storm.”
In addition to Islamic Relief USA, the other Islamic Relief affiliates that have made the pledge include Islamic Relief Worldwide, Islamic Relief Canada, and Islamic Relief Germany. The money will be used toward both immediate disaster response and long-term disaster recovery projects. The money will go to various community organizations to help facilitate the work.
Islamic Relief USA’s Disaster Response Team, which comprises of both staff and volunteers, helped provide food and a place to sleep for many evacuees at a mega-shelter they operated in Dallas. The American Red Cross also assisted in the effort.
