Safi, Morocco — Since Sunday, December 14, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding in the western region of Morocco as the death toll from a series of catastrophic flash floods climbs to 37. After years of drought, the hardened soil couldn’t absorb the rain, leading to widespread destruction and devastating communities.

Morocco is slowly becoming more arid and is highly vulnerable to climate change. Increased temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are expected to lead to recurring drought and a subsequent decrease in agricultural productivity. In turn, families across the country are projected to suffer loss of livelihood and major food insecurity.
