Chechnya

Two wars tore through Chechnya during the 1990s and into the following decade, destroying the region’s economy, job market and civil infrastructure—forcing more than 370,000 Chechens to flee their homes.

Inaccessibility to Chechnya has made it difficult for outside governments, human rights groups and nongovernmental organizations to gather more information about the situation in Chechnya.

Islamic Relief was one of the first aid agencies to assist Chechens affected by conflict in the mid-‘90s and has been working in the Northern Caucasus since 1995. Islamic Relief responded immediately to help refugees—relief teams pitched tents for homeless families and provided them with food, water, clothes and wood.
