Severe Flooding Slams the Philippines

On November 17, severe flooding overtook the Philippines, resulting in the displacement of over 700,000 people across multiple provinces. Crop damage has affected the livelihoods of families who are dependent on agriculture and fishing for their daily or seasonal wages; water systems have been damaged including wells and pumps; and the damage to infrastructure including homes, roads, and bridges has pushed families to take shelter in evacuation centers, where access to proper hygiene and sanitation is becoming increasingly challenging.

Islamic Relief is currently working with the local government and non-governmental organizations to conduct needs assessments. Our immediate response includes providing cash assistance to vulnerable families across the affected area, and your donations to our Asia Humanitarian Fund can help support these efforts and bring relief to our brothers and sisters in need.

Focus on the Philippines

The Philippines has been ranked as one of the nations most vulnerable to climate disasters due to its geography. In turn, this has led to greater intensity and power in tropical storms. The latest emergency, Tropical Storm Nalgae (Paeng), left trails of devastation across the country. In addition, one-quarter of the population lives below the poverty line. But one thing remains clear. The people of the Philippines are resilient, and with the support of donors like you, families in need can break the chains of poverty and move towards building sustainable livelihoods.

Islamic Relief’s Dedication to the Philippines

Islamic Relief has served in the Philippines since 2013, and continues to provide humanitarian and development assistance across the country today.

A few of our interventions include:

  • Food aid
  • Access to education
  • Sustainable livelihood development
  • Women economic empowerment
  • Emergency aid for natural disasters including typhoons
