Abdullah Shawky showed us picture after picture. He spent four weeks on a Greek island at a Syrian refugee camp. It was eight kilometers from the coast of Turkey.
“You have to document this… people have to know what’s going on,” he said, recounting a conversation with another volunteer.
Shawky went to Greece to help; he came back two weeks ago a changed man with tragic stories to tell about desperate refugees.
Like the one about a mother who lost three children when their boat capsized.
“Her screams are something I remember very vividly,” Shawky said.
