“This week we distributed 300 turkeys and other food items to low-income residents to help them celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.
Islamic Relief USA donated the turkeys and produced we distributed to families at our early learning centers, members of the Washington Highlands community, and other low-income residents in the District.
Volunteers packaged items in reusable shopping bags and helped distribute on the same day. Representatives from WinnResidential helped prep bags and delivered turkeys directly to residents of the Washington Highlands community. Home visitors from our Office of Early Learning picked up items for our home-based families and center directors. Other members of the community were able to come pick up food items directly from our “Petey” Greene Community Service Center until 7 pm.
Wards 7 and 8 are home to 75% of the city’s food deserts, according to D.C. Policy Center. The “Thanksgiving Turkey Give Away” was an effort to provide nutritious and balanced meals to low-income families with limited access to grocery stores.”
