WASHINGTON, DC (October 12, 2005) – The Washington, DC office of
international relief and development organization Islamic Relief will be holding
a national press conference on Thursday, October 13 at the National Press
Club to inform media professionals of their efforts to assist victims of the
devastating South Asia earthquake.
Islamic Relief has been chosen as the lead agency for helping earthquake
victims in Pakistan by international relief organizations working on the ground
in the earthquake-affected areas.

Islamic Relief has launched a worldwide $10 million appeal for earthquake
victims, of which $4 million has already been allocated.
Islamic Relief was on the ground within hours of the disaster, and has thus
far, and its immediate projects include emergency healthcare (Islamic Relief
operates 10 health clinics in the area), emergency shelter, and food
Islamic Relief has been working in Pakistan since 1992, has a full-time staff of
over 100 in the country. Islamic Relief has three full-time offices near the
earthquake-affected areas in Islamabad, Neelum Valley, and Muzaffarabad.
Included amongst its emergency response is a partnership with Connecticut-
based AmeriCares, which airlifted a shipment of emergency medical equipment
to Islamabad, Pakistan, which Islamic Relief staff will distribute in the affected
