The following is an excerpt from an article posted on Business Insider in Aug 2017:
“NEW YORK, Sept. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — 9/11 Day leaders, who founded the federally-recognized September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, are calling upon all Americans to observe the upcoming 16th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks as a national day of unity and charitable service.”
“On 9/11, and in its aftermath, we were reminded once again that America is at its best when we come together and focus on our common humanity, embracing and respecting our differences as we pursue solutions to our challenges,” said Jay S. Winuk, co-founder and executive vice president of the nonprofit 9/11 Day and who lost his brother, Glenn J. Winuk, an attorney and volunteer firefighter and EMT who died in the line of duty on 9/11. “For 9/11 this year, and especially in light of current events, we hope all Americans will take that sentiment to heart, and pay tribute by joining together and spending the day performing good deeds.”
9/11 Day organizers are also calling upon Americans to share personal messages and prayers on September 11, through 911day.org, and to observe six moments of silence that occur on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. These happen (all ET) at: 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. 9/11 Day leaders are inviting those on social media to post or share #momentofsilence, #911day, #neverforget at each of these times, and remain silent on social media for 60 seconds thereafter.
