Libyan-American doctor returns from treating war victims in Benghazi

Dr. Mahmoud Traina cannot forget the image of Abdullah and the make-shift axe the middle-aged father waved in his hand from a hospital bed in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, ready to fight the forces of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

Shrapnel had torn Abdullah’s abdomen and thigh in the recent fighting and his weak heart had lapsed into severe failure, but the bearded shopkeeper could hardly wait to leave the hospital and return to the battlefield.

“He was pushing us every day so we would let him go so he could go fight some more,” said Traina of West Los Angeles, who returned earlier this month from a week-long humanitarian trip, mainly in Benghazi, to help Libyans in need.
