Puerto Rico remains a priority for Islamic Relief USA. The people of Puerto Rico suffered a category 4 hurricane, Hurricane Maria, in 2018. Over 3 million people suffered went without power for more than 4 weeks. Approximately 3,000 people died as a result.
Here are some recent development statistics about Puerto Rico:
- More than 200,000 Puerto Ricans, who are U.S. citizens, have left home and arrived in the continental U.S. since the storm. (Mercy Corps, 2018)
- 350,000 public school students we left unable to attend school regularly. (Mercy Corps, 2018)
IRUSA visited Puerto Rico in June 2018. Many people still need water, food, generators, and so much more. IRUSA is working to provide emergency food parcels in partnership with local partner Lions Club of Puerto Rico.
Islamic Relief USA was also recently recognized by FEMA for a well that we helped build in Puerto Rico to ensure that many survivors of the earthquake no longer have to worry about if they will run out of suitable drinking water.
