In the past year in Haiti, a country already battling severe economic downturn, fell victim to multiple natural disasters. Diseases such as malaria, cholera, and diphtheria have become widespread. Due to the devastation from natural disasters, Haiti has seen many citizens flee to neighboring islands.
The humanitarian situation in Haiti continues to remain a concern:
- 2.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance (UNOCHA 2019)
- 532,000 people need access to health services (UNOCHA 2019)
- 13,000 children (under five years of age) suffer from severe acute malnutrition. (UNOCHA 2019)
Islamic Relief USA was among several relief institutions responding to the pass earthquakes in Haiti. Alongside partners such as Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Lutheran World Relief emergency aid was distributed to those internally displaced.
