BURBANK, California (September 2, 2005) – The Katrina Hurricane disaster has
thus far left over one million people displaced, and will require the largest
relief effort in U.S. history.
Islamic Relief has pledged $2 million to aid in relief efforts for victims who
have fled to Mobile, AL, Baton Rouge, LA, and Houston, TX.
In Houston, Islamic Relief is working in coordiation with the Muslim community
in the city to help over 25,000 victims. Islamic Relief has staff and volunteers
on the ground.
In Baton Rouge and Mobile, Islamic Relief staff is working on the ground to set
up relief operations, and will be distributing urgently needed items such as
water, food, and hygiene kits. In addition, Islamic Relief is also planning to
provide emergency shelter for the displaced people. Islamic Relief will also
assist in the clean-up efforts in the hurricane-affected areas of the cities.
Islamic Relief is working with many different organizations and faith-based
groups, including the Muslim American Society (MAS) to gather emergency
relief supplies. In addition, Islamic Relief has received offers of discounted
supplies from several businesses for the relief efforts.
Islamic Relief spokesman Arif Shaikh said in a statement, “We are extremely
appreciative of the cooperation we have received in the three cities in which
we are planning our relief activities. In these times, it is important that people
of all faiths and backgrounds come together to aid the victims of this
