BURBANK, California (December 30, 2004) – The death toll from the
devastating tsunamis in Asia has reached 120,000, and The World Health
Organization says as many as five million people are at risk, with little water,
food or shelter.
The United Nations reported that the disaster would require the biggest relief
effort the world has ever seen.
Islamic Relief Worldwide Launches $10 Million Appeal, Begins Work on the
Ground
Islamic Relief Worldwide’s Emergency Response Team in Indonesia has begun
distributing food, water, and emergency medical aid through its temporary
office in Banda Aceh. IRW is working in Indonesia in coordination with the
Indonesian Red Crescent.
IRW’s Emergency Response Team in Sri Lanka has begun distributing hygiene
kits to the affected population.
IRW will be also be providing water and sanitation facilities, as well as food
and water to the victims.
IRW is also working in Chennai, India with its partners to implement
emergency projects in the next few days.
