“CLAYTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – In just 15 minutes, the Flint Islamic Center raised over $10,000 during a fundraiser for hurricane relief.
The event was held Friday afternoon, which also marked the beginning of the Islamic New Year, following weekly prayers focused on hurricane victims in the U.S. and the Caribbean.
Shona Siddiqui, Outreach Coordinator for the Islamic Center, said that helping those most in need is a central tenet of Islam.
“The Prophet Muhammad said that ‘Charity is prescribed for every descendant of Adam every day that the sun rises.’ Our prayers have been going out to the victims since the beginning, and we believe those have power. But we also need to open our pockets and share the resources God has given to us for exactly that purpose,” Siddiqui added.
Friday also marked the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
Islamic Relief USA, one of 40 charitable organizations recommended by Charity Navigator will be distributing aid from the funds raised to those still suffering in the affected areas. ”
