STANTON, California (November 11, 2004) – Orange County-based non-profit,
Be the Cause, is sponsoring an “Evening in Sudan” to raise cultural and
humanitarian awareness, as well as donations to support relief efforts in the
war-torn region. Over 50,000 people have already died in the western region
of Darfur, and it is estimated that 350,000 people may die by mid-December
due to starvation and disease.
Coordinator Michele Benderra, says, that their goal is to present the crisis in
a “non-religious” and “non-political” manner. “We hope to ‘build a bridge’ of
education, compassion, and inspiration between Orange County, California
and Darfur, Sudan.”
All proceeds will be split equally among three organizations – Islamic Relief
USA, a Burbank-based international relief and development organization,
Catholic Relief Services, and the Lost Boys of Sudan Education Fund. The
International Rescue Committee will also be accepting gently used clothing
and houseware items for refugees living in the Southern California area.
