BURBANK, California (September 9, 2005) – The Detroit Muslim community will
be holding a fund-raising benefit dinner for victims of the Katrina Hurricane,
as well as for ‘Children in Need’ all across the world.
Keynote speaker at the event will be Chip Pitts, Chairman of Amnesty
International.
Funds at the benefit will be collected by Islamic Relief, an international relief
and development organization with over 20 years of expertise in disaster
relief. Islamic Relief is assisting Katrina victims in Houston, TX, Baton Rouge,
LA, and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.
Islamic Relief has already committed $2 million to Katrina disaster relief
projects, which includes distribution of emergency aid, emergency shelter,
and relocation projects. The total includes a $1 million project to provide
meals for displaced citizens in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center
for eight days. A $1 million check for this effort was presented to Houston
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee at a press conference in Washington, DC
on September 7.
