The Islamic Relief USA organization provided 200 turkeys to be given to needy families at an Alexandria, Virginia apartment complex.

The Virginia-based nonprofit Islamic Relief has been part of a coalition of nonprofits rebuilding homes in Princeville ever since the Eastern North Carolina town was flooded by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. It’s physically hard work, but Islamic Relief sees some volunteers return to Princeville again and again.
Islamic Relief USA, an Alexandria-based humanitarian organization, identified needy families to benefit from the program. Families received a 14-pound turkey with sides such as vegetables and stuffing.
Islamic Relief USA and United Planning Organization distributed 300 turkeys and other food items to help low-income families.
This year, 20 cities across the country participated in the event, said Naeem Muhammad, the U.S. programs manager for Islamic Relief USA.
National partner, Islamic Relief USA, said past events have inspired volunteers to establish service programs and organizations that aid communities year-round, said spokesman Minhaj Hassan.
"Several studies over the years have shown strong correlations between eating healthfully and academic performance," said Anwar Khan, president of Islamic Relief USA. "We want to make sure children, particularly from underprivileged backgrounds, enjoy the same access to high quality food as their peers. Every child is precious."
Imam Mika’il Stewart Saadiq, leader of the Muslim Center Mosque, said the event offers dignity for the helper, as much as it does people who benefit from the donations and the health screenings.
