B.C. Dodge & R. Mordant Mahon talk to Scott Cooper and Joe Jenkins from Veterans for American Ideals in this episode of “What a Relief!” — IRUSA’s official podcast.
In this episode, B.C. & Mordant welcome two special guests: Scott Cooper and Joe Jenkins from Veterans for American Ideals. They were introduced to the show when IRUSA was featured on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.
Their organization was founded upon reflecting on the existing organizations that serve veterans in this country. The question was posed: But what opportunities are there for veterans to advocate for others?
The organization was happy to partner with Islamic Relief USA after becoming concerned with the increasingly hateful rhetoric around the country, particularly anti-Muslim bigotry and anti-refugee sentiments.
They describe themselves as a group of veterans who are seeking to remind Americans that we’re safest and most secure when our actions match our ideals. And for anyone who still can’t get down with that mission, Scott and Joe openly address concerns. “This organization is tapping into the need to use the values that we agreed to protect with our lives,” they remind listeners.
Tune in to hear the stories that moved them to serve. In this episode, you’ll also get a special treat: one of the hosts is in fact a veteran himself. You’ll have to listen to find out which one, and to hear him talk about honor, courage and commitment.
This episode features a conversation that is seldom heard but full of gems, such as reminding listeners that, “to call yourself the home of the brave, you need to act brave.”
It beautifully highlights the common ground between Muslims and veterans: an unlikely pair easily unite as allies for good.
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
