ALEXANDRIA, VA, July 7, 2015—Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit charity providing humanitarian aid in more than three dozen countries, is distributing food packages for families in need during the month of Ramadan, which began in June. The 20150618_Ramadan Distribution Dar Al Hijrah_37 copyRamadan bus tour is visiting nearly 20 cities from Chicago to Florida to deliver food—including a Native American Reservation here in Utah on July 9.

Islamic Relief USA is privileged to expand our humanitarian services to American Indian communities. At the Goshute Tribe, unemployment and lack of income have created generational poverty. The Tribal Nations are the original inhabitants of North America, and their vibrant cultures have benefited all Americans. It is Islamic Relief USA’s honor to be a partner with various Native American organizations, assisting them to promote healthy and sustainable communities.

Ramadan is the month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims all over the world, serving also as a reminder of the significant number of people who suffer from hunger on a daily basis. According to the most recent Census report, over 17 million families in the United States are food insecure. One in 4 children is at risk for hunger. More than 46 million people living in the United States live in poverty, the highest number recorded in the 52 years for which poverty statistics have been reported, according to the World Hunger Education Service.

Islamic Relief USA offers food services to address hunger year-round in the United States. The Ramadan bus tour is a new addition this year, delivering 3,000 food packages to families across the country. Each box holds approximately 30 pounds of food, including rice, pasta, beans, oil, canned meat, cheese and dates.
