California Wildfires Displace Thousands
More than a dozen massive wildfires are surging through northern California and have already killed at least 32 people. Low humidity and high winds aid them in their rapid spread across several counties, so far scorching over 220,000 acres—an area three times larger than Washington D.C. The damage has been severe—more than 2,000 homes and businesses destroyed and 80,000 without power. The smoke from the fires is causing dangerously unhealthy air quality, and over 20,000 have been evacuated. To make matters worse, there is no rain forecasted for the coming week.
IRUSA’s Disaster Response
Islamic Relief USA’s Disaster Response Team has mobilized quickly, working to bring aid to those affected by the wildfires. The team is working with the American Red Cross to set up shelters, begin disaster assessments and to provide emergency relief. This page will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
