2017 California Wildfires Displaced Thousands
More than a dozen massive wildfires surged through northern California in 2017, killing over 32 people. Low humidity and high winds aided them in their rapid spread across several counties, which scorched an area several times larger than Washington D.C. The damage was severe—more than 2,000 homes and businesses were destroyed and nearly 100,000 were without power. The smoke from the fire caused dangerously unhealthy air quality and thousands of evacuations.
IRUSA’s Disaster Response
Islamic Relief USA’s Disaster Response Team quickly mobilized, working to bring aid to those affected by the wildfires. The team partnered with the American Red Cross to set up shelters, begin disaster assessments and to provide emergency relief.
