Islamic Relief USA volunteers will be in Puerto Rico starting June 17

Alexandria, Va. - Islamic Relief USA is sending volunteers to participate in relief efforts in Puerto Rico, which is still recovering from the extensive damage it sustained in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

IRUSA previously sent personnel shortly after the hurricane touched down last September. But recent news reports have made it clear much more help is needed, in order to enable people to return to the daily lives they were accustomed to before the massive storm.

The idea is that the rich would give to the poor. It’s a way of getting close to almighty God,” said Belkacem Nahi, regional manager for IRUSA, IRUSA & other Muslim charity groups have zakat calculators on their websites. The money is used “anywhere where there is a need, including Africa, Asia & in the United States.”In the U.S., he said, “we have food programs for the poor, disaster relief teams, and help medical clinics for low-income people.”

New Grant Opportunities
Islamic Relief USA is accepting letters of inquiry for its Silver Anniversary Community Investment Project, which will distribute grants to groups of people who historically haven’t intersected and help them work together on community service-oriented projects. Nonprofit and faith-based groups that are bringing together people with "meaningful divisions" — representing different political philosophies, races, religions, or other characteristics — are eligible. Each grant is worth $1,000 to $25,000, and proposed projects must be completed within the United States or a U.S. territory within one year.

Public Affairs Advocacy Manager (VA)

The Public Affairs Campaign and Advocacy Manager will be responsible for creating strategic campaign and advocacy efforts of the Department of Public Affairs. The focus of the Department’s work is to promote Islamic Relief’s advocacy priorities among domestic and international government and non-governmental partners to strengthen IRUSA’s role in advocacy coalitions, and to protect IRUSA’s reputation with various stakeholders. The Manager will report directly to the Director of Public Affairs. The candidate must show commitment to IRUSA’s faith inspired values and principles as well as a commitment to the vision and mission of the organization.
